Using small firms in DPA
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-NY, who chairs the House Small Business Committee, along with Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-MD, wrote to President Biden on Feb. 5 asking him to include small firms when applying the Defense Production Act to build up medical supplies for pandemic response.
The focus should be on minority-owned small firms, which have been the most impacted by the pandemic, they wrote, citing a federal study saying that in the first two months of the pandemic, 41% of Black-owned and 32% of Hispanic-owned small firms closed vs. 22% of all small firms.
They urged Biden to apply the small business preferences allowed under the DPA law.
