Letters in mail to hack victims
The Office of Personnel Management has begun notifying victims whose personal information, including Social Security numbers or fingerprints, was stolen in the recent massive OPM hacking incidents. The victims include federal employees and contracting workers.
The OPM is sending letters through the U.S. Postal Service to inform the victims of the identity theft protection and credit monitoring services to be provided to them and their family members at no cost, for three years.
The notices also contain personalized identification numbers, which are needed to enroll in the covered services. Beth Cobert, acting director of OPM, announced the outreach effort in a recent blog.
