Congress’ three big bills
Lawmakers have approved three major legislative packages recently:
- The House and Senate in late July both backed the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen the domestic chip manufacturing industry and scientific research to boost US competitiveness;
- The House on July 20 passed a “minibus” package of six appropriations bills totaling over $400 billion for fiscal 2023, covering budgets for the USDA, Energy Dept., FDA, HUD and the Transportation and Veterans Affairs Depts. and more; and
- The Senate on Aug. 7 approved the Inflation Reduction Act to reduce the US deficit by $300 billion, along with President Biden’s major initiatives on lowering drug prices and mitigating climate change. House approval is expected shortly.
