White House lauds SDB goal achievement, outlines initiatives
White House officials on July 26 celebrated the government’s achievement of reaching President Biden’s 11% goal for Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB) procurement in fiscal 2021, a year earlier than anticipated. They also revealed other new initiatives for SDB contracting.
A year ago, Biden announced a new 11% goal for SDB procurement, up from the previous 5% goal, to be attained in fiscal 2022.
However, the SDB goal actually was met last year. The Small Business Administration on July 24 released its fiscal 2021 Procurement Scorecard indicating that SDB procurement was 11.01%. White House officials credited a fourth-quarter “interagency push” and the new 8(a) STARS III contract for the boost.
A White House Fact Sheet listed other actions to aid SDBs, including:
- DOT, MBDA, GSA, EPA and SBA will host outreach events to provide technical assistance for SDBs to benefit from the recent Bipartisan Infrastructure Law;
- DOT will reach small underserved firms through its Connections Marketplace online platform;
- The MBDA (Minority Business Development Agency) is awarding nearly $3 million to 26 of its Business Centers to help underserved firms access contracting opportunities;
- Through the Equity Through Infrastructure project, grantees in Chicago, Denver, Long Beach, Philadelphia and other areas have pledged to make changes to contract more with SDBs.
