Small biz data is weak, IG says
The Small Business Administration’s annual management audit revised its critique of small business contracting to focus more on widespread data problems and less on large firms winning small business awards.
The SBA’s Office of Inspector General modified its priorities in its Report on the Most Serious Management and Performance Challenges Facing the SBA in Fiscal Year 2016 .
For a number of years, the auditors had described the SBA’s small business contracting challenge this way: “Procurement flaws allow large firms to obtain small business awards and allow agencies to count contracts performed by large firms towards their small business goals.”
However, this year the challenge was broadened: “Weaknesses in Small Business Contracting Programs and Inaccurate Procurement Data Undermine the Reliability of Contracting Goals Achievement.”
“We have realigned the discussion,” the OIG’s report stated. An OIG official confirmed to Set-Aside Alert that the current focus is on widespread data and program shortcomings that may be affecting the integrity of goal achievement.
