‘Climate smart’ fed’l buildings
White House officials on Aug. 3 announced the government’s Climate Smart Buildings Initiative to partner with the private sector to upgrade federal buildings for energy efficiency and reduced or net-zero carbon emissions.
The initiative is expected to generate $8 billion in private investment by 2030 to modernize federal facilities through energy savings performance contracts. The renovations are paid for with future energy savings without requiring upfront taxpayer dollars.
Such contracts are predicted to grow from $251 million last year to $1.2 billion a year by 2030. Modernization efforts include on-site clean electricity generation; efficient lighting and insulation; and integrated electric vehicle charging.
Energy-saving performance contract efforts include:
- The General Services Admin. leveraged $91 million in private funds for energy savings at six federal buildings in DC in 2021, and awarded a $117 million performance contract to reduce emissions at 12 federal buildings in Georgia;
- The Internal Revenue service awarded a $14 million energy-saving performance contract at its New York office; and
- The Energy Dept. expects to spend $250 million for such contracts.
