$3.4 billion of DOE subcontracts did not get audited: GAO

Energy Dept. vendors awarded $3.4 billion in subcontracts over 10 years that did not get audited as required, according to a review by the GAO.

Some of those subcontracts had been unaudited for so long that they exceeded the 6-year statute of limitations to recover unallowable costs.

Based on those findings, the GAO determined that DOE needs to clarify which subcontracts should be audited and what an audit should entail.

The GAO made six recommendations for improvements.
