Legislation, grants for tribes
Indian Country advocates are supporting two recently-submitted bills aimed at supporting entrepreneurship and business growth in tribal communities.
The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development endorsed HR 1900, submitted by Rep. Deb Haaland, D-NM, that sets up a business incubators program within the Interior Dept. to promote economic development on Indian reservations.
The center also is backing HR 1937, sponsored by Rep. Norma Torres, D-CA, which would amend several laws, including the Buy Indian Act, to enhance economic development opportunities to Indian communities.
The companion bills in the Senate are S 212 and S 294.
In addition, the Energy Dept. announced up to $17 million in funding for energy infrastructure on tribal lands.
The funding is provided through the DOE Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs. It supports tribes, including Alaska Native Regional Corporations and Village Corporations, Intertribal Organizations and Tribal Energy Development Organizations.
