Trump names Jovita Carranza to replace McMahon at SBA

President Trump announced in a tweet that he intends to nominate Jovita Carranza, U.S. Treasurer, as the next administrator of the Small Business Administration, replacing Linda McMahon.

McMahon said last month that she would step down on April 12 from her role leading the SBA. She is expected to help raise money for Trump’s reelection campaign for the 2020 presidential election.

At the Treasury Dept., Carranza serves as principal advisor to Secretary Steven Mnuchin and has direct oversight of the U.S. Mint, Fort Knox and the Office of Consumer Policy.

Carranza previously served as the deputy administrator for the SBA under President George W. Bush

Previously, Carranza worked for more than two decades at United Parcel Service, where she started as a night-shift box handler and worked her way up to president of Latin America and Caribbean operations.

As SBA administrator, McMahon said in a statement she was pleased with her work supporting small business federal contracting, among other programs.

“I am very proud of the work this agency has done to improve the way we connect small businesses to capital, counseling and government contracts. The focus that we have put on supporting women entrepreneurship, veteran businesses and rural development has been particularly rewarding for me,” McMahon said.

However, the government’s small business procurement share fell slightly in fiscal 2017 under her tenure, to 23.88%, down from 24.34% the year before. Last year’s was the lowest level since fiscal 2013.

Similarly, procurement from women-owned small firms fell last year to 4.71%, down from 4.79% in fiscal 2016 and from 5.05% in fiscal 2015.

On the other hand, procurements from small firms owned by service-disabled veterans rose to 4.05% in fiscal 2017, up from 3.98% the year before.
