Trump asks for big budget cuts
President Trump’s budget request for fiscal 2020 released on March 11 calls for major budget cuts to non-defense agencies and a boost for defense and homeland security.
The proposed funding reductions include 31% less for the EPA, 24% less for State and USAID, 19% less for DOT, 16% less for HUD, 15% less for USDA, 14% less for Interior, 12% less for HHS and for Education and 11% less for Energy. Also, Defense would receive 5% more; Homeland Security, 7% more; and Veterans Affairs, 8% more.
The president’s budget is unlikely to win approval in Congress, where Democrats control the House.
