Funding to continue to Dec. 21
Congress avoided shutdown with two-week extension
President Trump on Dec. 7 signed legislation to continue funding the government until Dec. 21. Congress had approved the extension of a continuing resolution for two more weeks.
The move will keep the federal government running and avoid a partial shutdown for now, while negotiations continue with a goal of completing appropriations for federal agencies for fiscal 2019. A partial shutdown still could happen if no agreement is reached by Dec. 21.
Funding for a border wall continues to be a sticking point. Trump has previously threatened a shutdown if Congress does not approve $5 billion for wall construction efforts on the U.S.-Mexico border. The Republican-led Congress approved only $1.6 billion for the wall earlier this year.
Democrats will take over leadership of the House in January.
