Government shutdown a threat
Some agencies funded but partial shutdown possible
President Trump has continued to talk about the possibility of a partial government shutdown this month if Congress does not provide more funding for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“If I was ever going to do a shutdown over border security — when you look at the caravan, when you look at the mess, when you look at the people coming in... This would be a very good time to do a shutdown,” the president said on Nov. 17.
Trump has requested $5 billion for new wall construction in fiscal 2019. A bipartisan Senate bill earlier this year offered $1.6 billion.
While Trump wants wall funding, Democrats want protection for the Mueller investigation.
A shutdown would not affect the Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Energy, and Veterans Affairs department, which were funded through two minibus bills.
Funding for the remaining federal agencies is set to expire at 11:59 pm on Dec. 7 unless Congress approves spending bills or extends the deadline. It would be the third shutdown of 2018.
