Federal contractor survey shows ups and downs
Grant Thornton’s 2015 survey of federal contractors--including 52% who are small businesses--showed a mix of trends.
While 42% of the contractors gained more government contract revenue in the last year, 37% lost such revenue. Grant Thornton said the losses were due to budget cuts and sequestration.
Even so, 59% of the contractors added full-time employees this year, up from 42% last year. The median wage increase for full-time workers this year was 2%.
Forty-five percent of the contractors said their profits were 1% to 5% of revenues; 39% reported 6% to 10% profit; and 9% said 11% profit or higher. Seven percent had zero profits.
Also, 24% of the contractors said they “always perform” on government requests for out-of-scope work without contract modification. That is the highest in five years.
Regarding contracting officers, 45% of the contractors said their contracting officers were inflexible and unreceptive to rebuttals.
