Will there be a shutdown again?

Conservative GOP lawmakers in Congress are threatening to shut down the government on Oct. 1 in a fight over funding for Planned Parenthood.

Led by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, and backed by GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina and others, the group alleges that Planned Parenthood should be defunded based on its activities as described in recent videos distributed by an independent group.

The Washington Post has charged Fiorina and Cruz with making false statements about the organization (see http://goo.gl/XWAoND).

President Obama has said he would veto any bill defunding Planned Parenthood. Democrats claim they can sustain the veto. Political specialists recently put the odds of a shutdown at 50% to 75%.

In 2013, Congress shut down the federal government from Oct. 1 to Oct. 16 in a fight to defund “Obamacare.” The shutdown was reported to have cost the U.S. economy $24 billion.
