Most federal COVID19 contracts not competed
The government spent $17.8 billion on contracts related to the COVID-19 pandemic as of June 11, of which less than half--47%--were competitive contracts, according to a GAO report.
HHS was the largest buyer, with $8.9 billion spent on the coronavirus pandemic, followed by DOD, with $3 billion spent. DHS spent $1.7 billion and the VA spent $1.5 billion on COVID19-related costs.
About 62% was spent on direct health care needs, including medical and surgical equipment, including personal protective equipment; hospital clothing, medical research, drugs and lab equipment.
The GAO said emergencies such as the pandemic create extra challenges that can reduce competition.
