Ban on Chinese IT in contracts
Effective Aug. 13, federal contractors are prohibited from relying on specific Chinese-made telecom or video surveillance equipment in their future and pending contracts with the government, according to a GSA announcement.
The GSA announced the ban was instituted in a prepublication of an Interim Final Rule. The companies banned are Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., and Dahua Technology Co.
The prohibition is being made as a result of security concerns. It was ordered by Congress in the fiscal 2019 NDAA.
While the ban is in effect immediately as of Aug. 13, because it is an interim final rule, comments will be received until 60 days after the Final Rule is officially published in the Federal Register. As of press time, publication in the Federal Register had not occurred.
