NDAA includes anti-LGBT rights amendment
The U.S. House of Representatives added a provision to the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2017 that removes protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees of federal contractors.
Supporters said the amendment was motivated by “religious freedom,” while those opposing it said it allows discrimination against LGBT people.
The provision, advanced by Rep. Steve Russell, R-OK, allows religious groups that are government contractors to be exempt from civil rights protections for LGBT workers.
The bill would overturn President Obama’s executive order barring federal contractors’ discrimination against LGBT people.
A Democrat-led attempt to overturn the amendment failed on a 212-213 vote after six Republicans changed sides.
