Senate bill on Buy Indian Act
The Senate Indian Affairs Committee approved the Indian Community Economic Enhancement Act (S 212) to expand the Buy Indian Act and support economic development for tribes.
Sponsored by Chair John Hoeven, R-ND, the bill would allow tribes participating in Defense Dept. mentor-protege programs to benefit from the Buy Indian Act, order the use of Indian labor and products when possible in Buy Indian Act procurements and set up improved data collection on use of the Buy Indian Act, among other programs.
The committee also is preparing a second bill to create Native American business incubators.
“These long-sought initiatives enjoy broad support in Indian Country,” the National Center for American Indian Economic Development wrote in a joint letter with other advocacy groups.
