Trump seeks $4.8T for 2021
Big cuts for EPA, HHS
President Trump this week proposed a $4.8 trillion budget for federal agencies, including major cuts to domestic health, safety net and environmental programs.
Agencies on the chopping block in the White House’s fiscal 2021 blueprint include the Environmental Protection Agency, which would be slashed by 27%; Foreign assistance would drop by 21%, and the Health and Human Services Dept. would lose 9% of its funding.
Other proposed cuts include: HUD, down 15%; Transportation, down 14%; Interior, down 13%; Education, down 8%; USDA, down 8% and Energy, down 8%. Congress has rejected similar cuts in previous years.
Meanwhile, Trump’s budget would include $2 billion for a border wall and hike funds for Homeland Security, NASA and the Veterans Affairs Depts.
The Defense Dept. would see a budget of $740.5 billion, which is a decrease of 3% from the 2020 enacted level, when adjusted for inflation, according to Defense News.
The DOD numbers conform to a two-year budget deal agreed upon in Congress. However, the proposed budget cuts do not conform to that deal.
