Congress faces Jan. 19 deadline
Stopgap funding bill expires this month
Congress finished off 2017 by passing a stopgap spending bill to keep the government operating until Jan. 19. Now that deadline is nearing, while a host of other important legislative issues also need attention.
Among the unfinished business are negotiations onf the proposed additional $81 billion for disaster aid.
Congress left for the holiday break without stabilizing funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, without raising the nation’s debt ceiling to manage rising debt, and without dealing with the upcoming deadlines for deporting hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who arrived here as children, called dreamers.
Meanwhile, the fiscal 2018 spending bills are not done. GOP lawmakers want to raise defense spending dramatically, but to do so they also need to lift the caps set under the 2011 bipartisan budget deal.
