DBE awards to get boost
Now that President Biden’s infrastructure package has been signed into law, a large infusion of funding will begin flowing into contracts soon, including some set-asides for small firms.
Federal transportation funding generally goes to states, who handle the contracting. That is likely with the new $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure package.
Under the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program, the state transportation agencies receiving federal funds must set aside at least 10% for awards for small disadvantaged firms.
Small firms are being advised to obtain DBE certification in the state in which they hope to obtain contracts. Some states have indicated that the certification process could take weeks or months. State transportation authorities offer information online on how to apply, along with application materials.
The infrastructure package could reduce racial wealth gaps, according to a Drexel U. institute analysis: “Federal infrastructure spending offers a unique platform for growing Black- and Brown-owned businesses and building wealth in disadvantaged communities.”
