House flips to Democrats
Velazquez likely to chair House Small Biz Comm
After eight years of being controlled by Republicans, the House has flipped to Democrat leadership, effective in January--and that means a new chair for the House Small Business Committee, among others.
Democrats had flipped 32 GOP-held seats in the House as of press time, and are on track to win several more once all ballots are counted.
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-NY, the senior Democrat on the small business committee, is positioned to become the next chair, overseeing legislation, hearings and communications.
Rep. Steve Chabot, R-OH, has been chair since early 2015.
Velazquez previously was chair of the small business panel from 2007 to 2011. She has served in Congress since 1993.
A native of Puerto Rico, she has championed small business contracting programs and disaster loans for the island. She also has been critical of Small Business Administration initiatives that are not specifically authorized by Congress.
