Tribes win CARES funds; ANCs lose out
ANCs appeal to SCOTUS; DOJ backs ANC appeal
Tribal governments won their case in the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit to claim $8 billion in federal coronavirus relief funds for tribes in the CARES Act and to deny the funds to for-profit Alaska Native Corps. The appeals court judges ruled that the ANCs are not federally-recognized tribes under the law.
But the fight is not over. The ANCs have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court, and the Justice Dept. has joined their case.
