DOD says it met small biz goal for first time
For the first time, the Defense Department has met its goal for small business contracting, according to Andre Gudger, director of the office of small business programs.
Small businesses won 23% of DOD prime contracts in fiscal year 2014, receiving about $53 billion, Gudger said in a DOD release.
“This year, the Department of Defense not only exceeded its goal, but it also is on course to exceed the federalwide goal. … That's significant -- that's historical, in fact,” Gudger said.
The department also met its goal of 3% for contracts with small businesses owned by service-disabled veterans, totaling about $9 billion, Gudger said.
“The department is very interested in technology innovation capability, and traditionally, small business is the hub for innovation in technology,” Gudger said. “Being more agile and nimble, (small businesses) can bring and deliver products to the market faster.”
“There is a myth that small businesses don't build planes or ships or nuclear equipment,” he said. “Our Virginia-class sub -- a nuclear sub -- is 70% built by or developed by small businesses at the prime contract level.”
