Sequestration to cut $1.8B from civilian agencies
Current appropriations bills in the House would result in nearly $1.8 billion in funding reductions to civilian agencies in fiscal 2016 under sequestration, according to a new report from the Office of Management and Budget.
If the current House appropriations bills are enacted, it would “result in a sequestration of nearly $1.8 billion in the non-defense category,” OMB wrote in its report.
The report notes that the Senate has set budget levels within the Budget Control Act caps, avoiding sequestration cuts.
The House bills also would cut Defense Department spending, but only slightly, by $3 million, in fiscal 2016, OMB said.
Senate bills would reduce defense spending by only $1 million.
Sequestration went into effect in fiscal 2013, but the sequester cuts were partially replaced for fiscal 2014 and fiscal 2015 under a bipartisan deal in December 2013. However, sequestration cuts are scheduled to go back into effect in fiscal 2016 unless Congress takes further action to cancel or replace them.
