Sanders wants $15 minimum wage for all workers
Rep. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, and other progressive lawmakers have expanded their drive for a $15-per-hour minimum wage for federal contract workers to now include all full-time workers in the United States.
Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, introduced legislation to raise the national minimum wage to $15 an hour by as early as 2021. Wages would rise to $9 per hour as early as 2016, then rise each year to $10.50, $12 and $13.50 before reaching $15.
The current national minimum wage is $7.25. President Obama raised federal contractor wages to $10.10 per hour by executive order last year.
Sanders wrote to Obama in May asking for an executive order to raise wages for federal contract employees to $15 an hour. The order would give contracting preferences to firms that pay a living wage, offer health care and sick leave, and protect union rights.
