Judge holds up ANC aid again
A federal judge for the second time put a temporary hold on the Treasury Dept. to prevent it from distributing a portion of an $8 billion coronavirus tribal aid fund to Alaska Native Corporations.
The case was brought by tribes who asserted that Congress did not intend for monies to go to for-profit ANCs. However, the Treasury Dept. says ANCs are entitled to some of the money.
U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta initially put a hold on the funding, but in a later ruling, deemed ANCs eligible.
But in the July 7 decision, he wrote that the tribes would suffer 'irreparable harm' if funds went to the ANCs before the tribes could appeal. If the tribes do not file an appeal in the US Court of Appeals by July 15, the hold on the funds will expire, Mehta wrote.
