Fate of DOD mentoring

The Defense Dept. has had its own mentor-protege program since 1991. Now that program faces expiration unless it is reauthorized.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal 2016 allowed for new mentoring deals only through fiscal 2018, and reimbursements under existing deals through fiscal 2021, according to PilieroMazza PLLC.

There are several efforts in the Senate to permanently reauthorize the program. The Senate Armed Services Committee included such a provision in its recent markup of the NDAA for fiscal 2020. At press time it was unclear if the House version of the NDAA included a similar provision.
