House passes IT modernization legislation
Prospects uncertain in Senate
House lawmakers approved the Modernizing Government Technology Act to create a $500 million central fund to support efforts to update the government’s legacy IT systems.
The bill also authorized working capital funds at 24 large agencies to be used for IT upgrades.
The bill had bipartisan support and passed on a voice vote. However, Senate backing is uncertain as some lawmakers are raising concerns that such an account may not be the right approach. A spokesman for the Senate Appropriations Committee told Federal News Radio that agencies’ lack of technical skills and proper oversight need to be addressed.
