GAO hits DOD mentor-protege
25% of agreements not signed
An estimated 25% of the approved mentor-protege agreements audited in the Defense Department’s Pilot Mentor-Protege Program were not signed by both mentor and protege, according to a recent report from the Government Accountability Office.
The GAO reviewed 44 of the 78 active mentor-protege agreements in the longstanding DOD program. It found that many of the approved agreements lacked signatures.
That deficiency indicates that DOD management is not applying internal control standards effectively, the GAO said, recommending improvement. GAO also advised DOD to set better performance measures.
DOD proposed tightening up requirements for mentors and proteges in October, but its future is unclear.
