Obama proposes 8% increase for tribal programs, IHS
President Obama is asking for a $1.5 billion increase in programs for Native American and Alaska Native tribal programs, totaling $20.9 billion, which is an 8% increase over the 2015 enacted level.
That includes $6.4 billion for the Indian Health Service within HHS. That represents a $486 million or 8% increase above the current enacted level.
The Budget includes $718 million to fund contract support costs for IHS, an increase of $55 million. Tribes incur those costs to manage their own health programs.
INS offers the potential for increased opportunities for small business and minority-owned contracting due to the “Buy Indian” set-asides that went into effect in 2014.
