Several federal websites have won high marks in customer satisfaction in a survey produced by the University of Michigan.

The top score went to www.4women.gov, a project of the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Women’s Health Information Center. It scored 83 out of a possible 100 on the customer satisfaction index.

The ratings are based on the university’s American Customer Satisfaction Index, which tracks consumer opinion about goods and services.

Other top-performing federal sites were www.nasa.gov, with a score of 79; www.ers.usda.gov, run by USDA’s Economic Research Service, scoring 76; and www.firstgov.gov, GSA’s governmentwide portal, at 74.

Larry Freed, president of ForeSee Results, said www.4women.gov and www.firstgov.gov improved their satisfaction scores by making the sites look more like commercial Web pages and “taking the ‘government approach’ out.”
