Agencies make first try at tracking service contracts, GAO says
Faced with gaps in data, civilian agencies had difficulties in assembling inventories of their service contracts for the first time under a new law, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office.
Congress in 2010 included requirements that civilian agencies must compile and review annual inventories of service contracts. The goal was to see if the vendors were performing close to inherently governmental functions. Civilian agencies spent $126 billion on services contracts in fiscal 2011.
Because complete data was not readily available, the 49 participating agencies did not meet all the objectives and the inventories were of limited utility, the GAO said.
