  • VA OIG probing conference costs

The Veterans Affairs Inspector General is investigating allegations of excessive spending and improper gifts at two training conferences that cost at least $5 million.

The inspector general’s office disclosed that it has been investigating a tip about alleged excessive spending at VA training conferences in Florida in July and August 2011.

The IG also is looking into allegations that VA employees may have accepted thousands of dollars worth of gifts that included alcohol, concert tickets and spa visits.

The total conference costs are in dispute. While Rep. Jeff Miller, R-FL, claims it was $9 million, the VA says $5 million.

“While the inspector general has stated that the conferences were for legitimate training purposes, that would not excuse the misconduct or poor judgment that is alleged of even a few individuals,” VA officials told Government Executive.
