Army generates interest in $7B green energy RFP
The Army is anticipating substantial vendor response in its just-released request for proposals to purchase renewable and locally-generated electricity at about 180 installations in the United States.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, through its Engineering and Support Center in Huntsville, AL, issued the solicitation on Aug. 7 for $7 billion in total contract capacity to procure alternative energy through power purchase agreements.
The power would be produced at plants constructed at military bases and operated by contractors using private sector financing.
“We believe the Federal Renewable and Alternative Energy contract will provide the Army with an important means to achieve its goal of one gigawatt of renewable energy projects by 2025,” Army Secretary John McHugh said in a news release.
The Army said it received more than 900 comments from industry in response to their draft RFP in February.
The service hopes to begin making awards by the end of the year and start approving individual projects in 2013.
A vendor conference for the project will be conducted Aug. 22 at the Bob Jones Auditorium, Sparkman Center, Redstone Arsenal, Building 5300, Martin Road, Huntsville, AL.
