Judge backs ANCs for aid
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta reversed his earlier decision and is now allowing the Treasury Dept. to distribute a portion of $8 billion in tribal coronavirus aid to Alaska Native Corporations under the CARES Act.
The judge ruled that ANCs meet the definition of tribe under the law.
Several tribal governments had sued to prevent the money from going to for-profit corporate ANCs. Mehta initially agreed to put a hold on the funds, but now says the ANCs are eligible. The tribal governments are appealing.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly has held back approximately $700 million for ANCs in case the court ruled in his favor.
