Contractors may have been hacked
In the wake of the huge Office of Personnel Management hacks affecting more than 4 million current and former federal employees, questions are arising about how many federal contractors and their workers may have been affected by those breaches and by other possibly related hacks.
Investigations are continuing of the two known recent OPM hacks that allowed access to personal in formation and sensitive data. The number of personnel impacted by the data breaches may rise to include contractors.
Bloomberg Government, citing an anonymous lawmaker, reported on June 11 that the number of victims of the OPM hacks could grow as high as 14 million, including government contractors. However, Politico news service cast doubt on that estimate.
Meanwhile, the Homeland Security Department disclosed that as many as 390,000 current and former employees, contractors and job applicants may have had their private data compromised by a hack. That hack is believed to have originated in systems operated by KeyPoint Government Solutions Inc., a contractor that provides background checks for security clearances for the government.
