SBA Hands Out Awards During Small Business Week

Small business owners from Albuquerque, NM, and East Berlin, CT, were named SBA’s National Prime Contractor of the Year and National Subcontractor of the Year during the agency’s celebration of Small Business Week in Orlando.

Anthony Tenorio, President of Applied Technology Associates of Albuquerque, is the Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year. Rosemarie Micacci Fischer, CEO of TM Industries Inc. of East Berlin, CT, is the Small Business Subcontractor of the Year.

The awards honor small businesses that have provided the government and industry with outstanding goods and services.

Other federal contracting awards include:

Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence, recognizing large prime contractors that have excelled in their utilization of small businesses as suppliers and subcontractors. The recipients are Hamilton Sundstrand Space Systems International Inc. of Windsor Lock, CT, in the manufacturing category; Washington Group International of Boise, ID (construction); Harris Corp. of Melbourne, FL (research and development); and Dyncorp, a CSC Company of Fort Worth, TX (services).

Gold Star Award, recognizing the exemplary performance of federal agencies and their personnel in promoting small business in the federal marketplace. The recipients are Linda Wright, director of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization; Thelma Toler, director of the Executive Office of the President OSDBU; T.J. Garcia, retired director of the Commerce Department OSDBU; and Robert Faithful, director of the interior Department OSDBU.

Frances Perkins Vanguard Award, honoring government and industry for excellence in the use of women-owned small businesses as prime contractors and subcontractors. The recipients are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Louisville District and Science Applications International Corp. of McLean, VA.

The National Small Business Person of the Year is Sheree W. Mitchell, owner of Growing Room Inc., an operator of day-care centers in Columbus, GA.

Mitchell and her company care for more than 850 children and employ more than 170 people in five centers, including three operated on-site at large local employers.

She was selected from among the state Small Business Persons of the Year representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
