US contracting with small firms jumps in FY2014
Small business federal contracting experienced a growth spurt in fiscal 2014, the latest data shows.
The government awarded $91.5 billion in contracts to small businesses in fiscal 2014, an increase of 10% from the previous year’s total of $83 billion, according to the latest data on the White House’s Small Business Dashboard.
The dashboard is a dynamic database displayed online. It includes the latest unrefined data, of which a portion may be subject to modification or correction at later dates. The Small Business Administration generally announces official data for each fiscal year the following summer. The dashboard numbers may drift slightly higher or lower than the official tallies over time.
As of Jan. 6, the dashboard showed that the government has exceeded its 23% goal for small business contracting in fiscal 2014.
The dashboard was reporting 24.98% goal achievement for fiscal 2014, governmentwide, as of Jan. 6. If that percentage holds up in the official count, it would be the second year in a row for attaining the goal.
The SBA announced in August that the goal had been met for fiscal 2013 - the first time the goal had been attained in eight years.
The official fiscal 2013 goal achievement was 23.39%. However, the percentage has crept up over time. As of Jan. 6, goal achievement for fiscal 2013 had risen to 23.46%, according to the dashboard.
The dashboard also currently shows that the government achieved its small business goals for small disadvantaged firms and for companies owned by service-disabled veterans in fiscal 2014.
However, goal achievement fell short for women-owned small firms and for HUBZone small firms.
