The State Department’s Overseas Buildings Operations will host an Industry Day on Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Washington. State uses a wide cross-section of services, equipment, construction and operations for its embassy facilities around the world. Technical expertise that is required runs the gamut of the building industry. Real estate service providers are used in support of acquisitions and disposal actions (including brokerage, marketing and appraisals). Planning, architectural, engineering, interior design and general construction services are used, as well as maintenance services and generator, roof and fire protection systems replacements. There is a growing demand for building components and systems that can withstand blast and bio-chemical environmental security and operational compromise.

VA is inviting applications from architects or architect/engineer firms to provide design/construction-related work at its facilities nationwide, including Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. The Transportation Security Administration will begin accepting applications Nov. 19 from airports that want to hire private security companies to replace federal employees who screen passengers. By law, airports can opt out of the federal program. The agency has created a Web page to provide information about the opt-out program.
