The official Web portal to the federal government, FirstGov.gov, has won the Innovations in American Government Award, a prize sometimes called the “Oscar” of good government awards.

The award honors “outstanding examples of creative problem solving in the public sector.” It comes with a $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation and is administered by Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Council for Excellence in Government. Four other state and local programs also received the top prize.

GSA, which operates FirstGov.gov, recently completed a facelift of the portal. It rearranged information into separate categories aimed at citizens, businesses and nonprofit groups, federal employees and other governments.

The portal allows information searches by topic, so the user does not have to know which federal agency runs a particular program.

It also provides links to some state agencies, including lottery results – one of the most popular features.
