Former Official Picked To Lead GSA

President Obama wants to bring back a GSA veteran to run the agency.

The president announced he will nominate Martha Johnson to be administrator. She served as GSA chief of staff from 1997 to 2001. Other recent heads of the agency had no prior experience at GSA.

In addition, Johnson served as co-lead for the Obama Presidential Transition’s review team for GSA, giving her a close look at the agency’s current condition.

Johnson has served as vice president of culture at Computer Sciences Corp. since 2007.

GSA faces a number of challenges, the most immediate being the task of spending $5.5 billion of Recovery Act funds on energy improvements and other projects in federal buildings. In addition, the agency’s flagship GSA schedules have been suffering from a slowdown in sales for several years.

Johnson’s nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
