Viewpoint: What’s the Problem Up There? By Thomas D. Johnson, Publisher
Just last Friday, small business took another sucker punch in the gut. Congress couldn’t get its act together, so they dribbled another three months of funds to the transportation program.
For years now Congress has funded FAA in dribs and drabs, our highway and transportation programs piecemeal, and more continuing resolutions than I care to count. Meanwhile, small business isn’t about to hire employees for work that is only funded for three months. By the time they get the workers on board, security clearances processed, benefits and payroll set up, it’s time to start handing out pink slips because funding will expire.
Would you be able to function in such an uncertain situation? Or would you look at other markets—now improving—that are more stable?
This is not a political rant. It’s a rant about politics. Legislators like Ev Dirksen and Tip O’Neill had plenty to say about the other party, but in the end they were able to get things done, on time, and go out to socialize together the same night. Today’s Congress can’t get anything done, moves only at the last minute, and hustles out of town on vacation so they don’t have to mingle.
It’s time to get together, gang. House Small Business Committee Chairman Sam Graves hosts an Open Mike on the committee’s website, http://smallbusiness.house.gov/OpenMic/. Maybe, if enough contractors join in, Congress might begin to get the picture: it’s the one
creating uncertainty and blocking progress on jobs and the economy.
