DOD: civilian workers usually are cheaper than contractors
Civilian employees can do most jobs at the Defense Dept. less expensively than contractors, according to an internal DOD report.
The DOD report, compiled by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, was obtained by Government Executive magazine through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Overall, DOD found civilians were cheaper in 10 broad job categories, while contractors were cheaper in four categories, GovExec reported.
Looking at comparable jobs, DOD found that 57% of the time civilians were less costly to employ, except in Hawaii and Guam. If Guam is removed from the study sample, civilians would be less expensive in 65% of comparable jobs.
Civilians were particularly cheaper to employ in jobs as physicians, nurses, logistics and depot managers, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics categories. Government-run child centers had an average cost per child that was much lower than at contractor-run facilities.
Also, job comparisons in the Washington, DC and Southeast U.S. indicated that contractors cost more in the same jobs.
