Web Watch: Where The Money Is

A new federal website allows taxpayers to see where their money goes.

The site, www.usaspending.gov, tracks recipients of federal contracts and grants.

The Office of Management and Budget created the site by order of Congress. And it took some strange bedfellows to make it happen.

The 2006 Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act, which mandated creation of the database, was co-sponsored by conservative Republican Sen. Tom Coburn, OK, and liberal Democrat Barack Obama, IL.

Then OMB turned to one of its frequent critics, the nonprofit OMB Watch, to build the website. OMB Watch already had a similar site, http://fedspending.org/.

OMB officials said they bought the organization’s software for $600,000 and modified it to create the government site.

The government’s official contracting database, Federal Procurement Data System – Next Generation, has announced improvements in its reporting capabilities. Go to http://fpdsng.com/ for details.
