Another CR until January likely
Congress passed a two-week continuing resolution to keep the government open until Dec. 22, avoiding a shutdown. Observers say it looks likely that another extension until January is in the works.
Meanwhile, Congress also plans to lift spending caps that went into effect Oct. 1 from the Budget Control Act of 2011.
Those caps affect military and domestic spending, and would need to be lifted to implement the GOP plans for military spending hikes.
The GOP-led Congress recently passed the National Defense Authorization Act that allows $626 billion for defense, plus another $66 billion for overseas contingency operations. Those amounts far exceed the $549 billion budget cap in effect under the 2011 law.
The president seeks $54 billion in domestic spending cuts, opposed by Democrats. Votes on a major tax overhaul and potentially children’s health programs and a “Dreamers” immigration bill also are pending.
