GSA May Take COMMITS Contract

The Commerce Department has agreed to let GSA take over its COMMITS governmentwide acquisition contract, Federal Computer Week reported.

COMMITS (Commerce Information Technology Services) Next Generation is the only GWAC set aside for small businesses.

The report said the two agencies will ask the Office of Management and Budget to approve the transfer.

GSA’s new administrator, Lurita Doan, has been campaigning to kill GWACs operated by other agencies or bring them under GSA control. She has asked OMB to block the reauthorization of NASA’s Scientific and Engineering Workstation Procurement GWAC when it expires next year. She argues that GSA, as the government’s central procurement agency, is better qualified to manage the contracts.

Commerce awarded contracts to 55 companies under the COMMITS Next Generation vehicle in January 2005. The GWAC has a ceiling of $8 billion over 10 years.

The Government Accountability Office criticized Commerce’s management of the contract in a report earlier this year. (SAA, 7/14)
