Sen. Collins introduces “Buy American” measure
Sen. Susan Collins, R-ME, wants American soldiers to have American-made boots.
She has proposed legislation (S1197) to require that the Defense Department purchase military footwear made in the United States.
The bill comes on the heels of concerns raised about whether the military is properly complying with the Berry Amendment and the Buy American Act.
The Berry Amendment orders DOD to buy U.S. products if the order has a $150,000 minimum. The high dollar limit may be a factor enabling the government to get around the current law, according to the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) watchdog group.
POGO backs Collins’ bill and hopes to extend it beyond footwear.
