SCOTUS rules for ANCs
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) are eligible for about $450 million in COVID-19 relief funds that Congress had approved for Native tribes. The court ruled that ANCs are “Indian tribes” under the 2020 CARES Act.
Congress approved $8 billion in relief for tribes. While non-profit tribal governments claimed the funding was for them, the Treasury Dept. earmarked a portion for for-profit ANCs, which were created in 1971 to settle land and resource claims with the U.S. ANCs also are a special category in federal procurement. The court sided with Treasury and the ANCs.
