No appropriations yet for DOD Sect. 3610 payouts to vendors

The Defense Dept. will need billions of additional dollars to deliver Sect. 3610 reimbursements of paid employee leave to defense contractors maintaining readiness during the coronavirus pandemic, Ellen Lord, under secretary for acquisition and sustainment, told the House Armed Services Committee on June 10.

Congress, in the CARES Act, authorized but did not appropriate funds for carrying out Sect. 3610, Lord said.

DOD does not have the funding to cover Sect. 3610 costs, without cutting into modernization or readiness, Lord said. One contractor alone estimated its Sect. 3610 reimbursements would be $1.5 billion, she added. Ed. note: See the column on Sect. 3610 in this issue.
